What is Yoga?

I've always had trouble defining yoga to people. "What is Yoga?" they ask me at a dinner party, or at a social gathering. And I hate to admit this, but I'm usually stumped to deliver a consise answer that can wrap up this ancient philosophy into a tidy package they can easily grasp.

Not that yoga's hard - it's not. It's wonderful, and beautiful, and strong, and peaceful and I could go on and on. I love the practice, and I love that it meets me right where I'm at at any stage of my life. I love the fact that the more I know the more I have to learn. It's a life-long companion that's been a gift and one that I'm honored to share with others as a teacher. Heck, I just discovered Laughter Yoga! And it literally transformed my life. No joke - ha, ha, ha!

So what IS yoga you ask? In a nutshell yoga means union. Union between your body, your mind and your spirit. It's a way to get moving, and to touch your toes and nurture a sore back. It's a way to get in touch with your inner-self through meditation and self-inquiry. It's learning stress management through breath awareness and mindful breathing. And it can really kick your butt if that's what you're after.

There's many resources on this website if you're new to yoga or if you're an experienced student there's ways to deepen your practice. Check out our shop for my Beginning Yoga DVD, read our yoga blog, and if you're in Sioux Falls, SD, come to my studio The Dharma Room Yoga and Wellness Center - I'd love to meet you.

Wherever you live I invite you to check out a local yoga class. And try out a few different styles, studios and teachers. Find a teacher you resonate with and a style that suits you. You won't regret it. And be a good student, do your homework and find a teacher who's knowledgeable and certified. Take that first step and step onto a yoga mat. It just might change your life! See you in class!

Namaste,

Jill
